Unlawfull act of Sedition by U.S. Congress *Repost*

*This is a reposting from my other blog, The Colorado Geographer.  I felt it was important to share in the last 24hrs*
Dear Colorado American Citizens,
I often write about political issues dealing with environmental disasters and human rights violations. This week's blog will be no different, what is different is that normally I write about some police state, genocidal war, totalitarian regime on foreign soil. Instead, this time I write about the very real treasonous actions of the 112th United States Congress.
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012 Section 1031 allows for the indefinite detention of U.S. Citizens. For no other reason than the United States Government deems it prudent. If you want to Read Section 1031 of the NDAA 2012 you can find it here (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h112-1540 ).

Section 1031 is unlawful, immoral, unjust and unconstitutional. I am lucky to live in Colorado where Mark Udall Exposed section 1031. Here is what was reported about what Mark Udall had to say about the bill.

“I would also point out that these provisions raise serious questions as
to who we are as a society and what our Constitution seeks to protect,”
Colorado Senator Mark Udall said in a speech last week. One section of
these provisions, section 1031, would be interpreted as allowing the
military to capture and indefinitely detain American citizens on U.S.
soil. Section 1031 essentially repeals the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 by
authorizing the U.S. military to perform law enforcement functions on
American soil. That alone should alarm my colleagues on both sides of the
aisle, but there are other problems with these provisions that must be
resolved.”
Furthermore, Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, Criticizes the NDAA 1031 in the following video. Criticizing that our governments executive administration asked the language that protects citizens to be removed. You read that right. Our government, our executive branch, our president, requested and our senate yielded to him. That, the provisions to protect U.S. Citizens should be removed. 93 of 100 Senators did not only heed our president's request that "We the People" should be detained without trial, they allowed it to be written, then they voted to pass it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLiKvSz_wX8&feature=colike
This will not do! The NDAA cannot be allowed to pass into law. The NDAA 1031 passed by the Congress with 93 votes for and 7 votes against. But there is still a slim chance we can stop this vile act before it becomes law. To petition NDAA 1031 follow this link before December 13th 2011. Sorry I did not get the link out on this blog sooner. Here is the link:
http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-ndaa-section-1031-citizen-imprisonment-law-before-dec-13#

The seven decent Senators who voted against this fascist monstrosity of a bill, which would effectively repeal the Bill of Rights and the Posse Comitatus Act, are Rand Paul(R-KY), Mike Lee(R-UT), Tom Coburn(R-OK), Bernie Sanders(I-VT), Tom Harkin(D-IA), Jeff Merkley(D-OR), and Ron Wyden(D-OR).

I would Like to Congradulate Michelle C., Stephanie H. (& Chris M.) and Frederick M (Hey that's me) on a job well done at NDK. That's me chilling back stage after the contest. It was so Hot! I had to sit in front of the fan to cool off. I want to give a speacial thanks to Brooke M. Who did all my agent work for the weekend. She took photos, carried clip boards, registered me when i couldn't move, held props, grabbed water, and did just about everything I needed an extra set of hands for. Thanks Brooke. Now don't kill me but, Everyone say hi to Brooke and her nice big smile.
Brooke M. at NDK :)

Nan Desu kan ?? days and counting

Nan Desu Kan

It is time for Nan Desu Kan (NDK), a play on words on the Japanese phrase nan desu ka (what is this?). NDK is the premier anime convention of the Rockies. It is the largest anime con in Colorado. It last 3 days, lately around the second weekend of September (but has been held in other months). NDK has a year round presence taking part in festivals (like this year's Dragon boat festival), New Years Parties, and fund raising to name a few.

I have participated in conventions for a number of years. Of the conventions in Colorado I most enjoy Nan Desu Kan. I say this with some reservation. So here is a breakdown of the main Pro's and Con's of NDK.
CON: is prominently orientated towards teens (these days). It has nowhere near the 21 plus crowd that Starfest (locally) or Anime Expo (California) has.
PRO: However the fans are doing a lot to make a strong 21 and up scene.
CON: Costuming is more restrictive at NDK then other Conventions. A number of loopholes are exploited frequently. Example: No signs, no appearance of nudity, no tentacles.
PRO: Kid safe environment for people with families. As long as parents express discretion in video rooms.
CON: Older anime series are dying out without much representation. This is a tragedy! Some old school anime's are staples of the Industry. Astro Boy, Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Battleship Yamato, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Those Pesky Aliens, Dirty Pair, Dominion Tank Police are all amazing shows. Look them up sometime. It's a travesty of American Anime Culture that people don't know who Leji Mastumoto is.
PRO: Current industry personalities are becoming more active with NDK. I love this, it's great to see the industry supporting Denver. This year features a large variety great people, check out the guests here http://ndkdenver.org/guests.

I am looking to take part in the NDK Costume contest, the art shows and the shopping.
This is my costume from last year.

This is my costume for this year (still finishing it up).

For those who have no idea who I am dressed ass watch this. https://neoshinka.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/captain-harlock-2012-movie-trailer/

What I am looking forward to Seeing:
Jamie Marchi for no better reason then she is a hot redhead. But on a serious note, she did the voice of Masane Amaha (Whitchblade), Meg (Burst Angel) and Miss Valentine (One Piece). her role on One Piece is why I will be seeking Jamie's autograph for my pirate collection.
Few people get to have a long career in television, anime, movies, and music. Ryusei Nakao is a skilled and lucky man for doing just that. He has so much under his belt if you don't know his name look it up. For the DBZ crowd he did Frieza and Cooler, for Bleach he did Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and the list goes on.
Another Bleach voice actor is Stephanie Sheh she will be making her first apperence at NDK, she voice Orhime. She also has Voiced Eureka in Eureka 7,, and Hinata in Naruto.
Mary Elizabeth McGlynn did the voice for Major Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell Innocence, and Stand Alone Complex. And Cornelia in Code Geas whis is pretty cool. She Directs for the Disney Channel where she has directed 4 Naruto movies.
Regardless of your anime political views of rewriting a show for an American audience. I am happy to see Steve Yun and Tommy Yune who currently run the Robotech title will be return. Which is cool for people who remember Harmony Gold brought this industry to America. Admittedly I am a big fan of their current works, and I can't wait until I see the teasers for the new Shadow Chronicles movie.
Anyway I hope you enjoyed this post and I promise to have more pictures of NDK 2011 mid September.

Dragon Boats and Cosplay pt1

Dragon Boat Festival
So I spent last Saturday from 1pm to 7pm At Denver's Dragon boat Festival. It was fun. The merchant booths offered a wide array of foods and Asian themed goods. I enjoyed the panda booth the most (but I will get back to that later).
These are the three Ladies who joined me for the trip.

Left: Anna Ellis, Middle: Meagen Partin, Right: Teresa Mooney

Here are some shots of the Dragon Boats.

The stage shows where fantastic. Sadly I don't have enough pictures of all the Dancers. I do however have the Nan Desu Kan (NDK) special guest costumers. These contributors where invited by the consul-general of Japan to cosplay and represent NDK at this year's festival. I must say it was a crowd pleaser, we had one of the best turn outs for our stage. People actually left the shade to watch the parade of costumes.
So please enjoy (Names of Cosplayers and their characters will be added soon).

1.
2.
3.
4. I love the Snowflakes on this Fabric, it was an adorable choice.
5. Megen used trip and it was super effective.

6. I love the scale details of this prop.
7. These homemade butterfly wings are adorable. She made them out of copper wire and painted cloth.

8.

My Renji based Kendo Gi and Hakama.

I left my reed bamboo shoes in Colorado springs so I had to buy sandals at the festival, they broke, I nearly died tripping in them. I am exaggerating of course but man did it hurt.
My favorite booth was the Panda Preservation Booth. I received a Panda Umbrella.

Now to make a Genma Saotome costume!!!

Special thanks to Anna Ellis for taking pictures of the day and allowing me to post them for this blog.

Dragon Boat Festival Teaser

It is one week until Colorado's Dragon Boat Festival. This year the Consul-General of Japan will be there. I was invited to take part in a cosplay event (cosplay is costuming to themes of literature, tv, cinema, and manga art).

For those readers new to my blogs I run 2 blogs one on Geography and one on Costuming. For the next 2 weeks I have the boon to discuss both together. So both blogs will be sharing about Colorado's Dragon Boat Festival. For those interested in costumes I will be showing off my favorites of the event and a little bit about the participants. For those interested in Geography I will be discussing the influence of Asian Cultures in the Pikes Peak Region. So after this initial post each blog will have a different topic, Visit my other blog here http://thecogeographer.blogspot.com/

To start off the week:

The rich diversity of cultures in the Colorado region allows Americans and tourist to take part in many cultural events. One such event on July 30th is the Dragon Boat Festival held at Sloan Lake Park in Denver Colorado. For information about the event and directions for parking please follow this link http://www.cdbf.org/
The Dragon Boat Festival (or Duanwu festival) is a holiday originating in China and is associated with a number of Asian cultures today. It is held the 5th day of the 5th month (June 6th in the US traditionally), Denver Colorado Celebrates it on July 30th this 2011.

" The best-known traditional story holds that the festival commemorates the death of poet Qu Yuan (Chinese: 屈原) (c. 340 BCE – 278 BCE) of the ancient state of Chu, in the Warring States Period of the Zhou Dynasty. A descendant of the Chu royal house, Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance. Qu Yuan was accused of treason. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry, for which he is now remembered. Twenty-eight years later, Qin conquered the capital of Chu. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

It is said that the local people, who admired him, threw lumps of rice into the river to feed the fish so that they would not eat Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi. The local people were also said to have paddled out on boats, either to scare the fish away or to retrieve his body. This is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing." ~Wikipedia

Well I don't want to spoil to much today so I will post more soon.
Hope you can join us next Saturday July 30th at Sloan Park, Denver Colorado.

Meeting Mister Right

I keep telling my lady friends, if you want to meet men, good men, with jobs, a life, and living outside their parents' basement you have to join me for things other than parties and chasing down drinks at bars.

First off, clothing tip for all the ladies: Show off your legs, you cleavage, or your midrift but never all three. If you are looking to find a lasting relationship don't look like a streetwalker. Dress like a porn star if all you want is to be used.

Secondly, To meet quality guys you need proper apparel, locations with men and some idea of what is going on:

1. Comedy Classes. Improv groups, a good sense of humor is golden. But really any self improvement class that does not cry out "this is girlie" is a great place to meet guys.

2. Baseball Diamonds, OH dear god Girls go to a sporting event, and go without your busybody girlfriends who P*$$#block you all the time. Take a baseball cap, sunglasses, and suntan lotion. Buy a thirsty guy a drink and start talking to him. Guys go in pairs so bring a wing girl. Or just go and hunt down a guy who is a third wheel at the ballpark. Tailgating is always a good place to meet guys. Watch out! though they have body guards, good girl friends of his bros won't let a ho's crash their tailgate party. Bring beer, nothing is hotter than a girl sharing brew.

3. Music Clubs, Not bars! Not Dance clubs! No karaoke! Places with live local bands, concerts in the park. Guys don't want to be grinding on your ass after 20 other guys just did the same. Guys don't want to hear you belt out your favorite tune and make our ears bleed. If you are as good as you think you are you would have been discovered before 25. Remember hats, sunglasses, and suntan lotion when outside.

4. Business Conferences, chamber of commerce's, environmental shows, job fairs, acting guild meetings, home & garden shows. Career minded guys can support a good family. Career minded ladies impress them, dress in business attire (that means don't show off your underwear).

5. Blood Drives, can't bet meeting a good guy donating blood. Plus you will find out really fast if he has anything strange if they can't take his blood/plasma. Charitable guys typically have big hearts.

6. Science-Fiction Conventions. Cool guys, good amount of extra cash in their pocket, always happy to have a girlfriend. Unfortunately you will be competing with cool gamer chic's, nerdy girls with banging bodies, models and tailors and other various crafters. You will be surprised at how little you have to offer when Looks are all you have to offer. Cosmo and British scientist have proven girls who play video games have more fulfilling sex. And face it ladies guys who dress in costume are better at role-playing in bed (just learn what a D20 is first). On a side note you can find a Han Solo for the next time you put on your slave girl Leia costume from your college days.

7. Regular-Guy Bars, not a dance club, a bar. A Place guys go to watch sports, play pool, shoot darts, hit a fooseball table. A Guys Bar! Just make sure you find one in your age range. That means a dart club if your over 40, a pool hall over 30, and Dave & Buster's for the 20 crowd.

8. Car Shows. All you need is summer clothes sunglasses and suntan lotion. Go check out cars, both the guys showing off and the guys admiring the rides will be open to lovely intelligent women talking about cars. As with conventions, you will be competing with Indy chic's who know the car scene and models. Bring more than a hot pair of legs if you want to take a good guy home. At least know the difference between domestic muscle and import. Bonus points if you know the difference between Euro and JDM.

9. The Internet. No not dating sites. Social networks, social groups, club organizations, look up clubs and join a few and start talking to people.

10. Annual Events i.e. New Years Parties, Super bowl Parties, St Patrick's, Halloween, etc. Chances are you have this sweet nice guy you know (maybe two) who throw banging parties with people traveling across state lines to attend and you never go (or stick around long). Sure sometimes there is dancing and sometimes not.( If you want to dance, then dance. The more people who just get up and do it the more people who join in.) Most good hosts can mix mean cocktails so give your taste buds a tour of the wide world of liquors. But I digress , that hunky guy with his shirt off has known the host for decades and he is going to get the scoop on you from the host. If you're in with the host your work is halfway done. Just dress for the party, sporting events get jerseys and cheer leading costumes, Halloween is just about anything goes Etc.)

Other thoughts:
Men's clothing stores, want to find a man, go to where they shop for clothes. All guys like meeting lovely ladies who want to help him find stunning well fitting threads. It's almost as valuable as a gay guy shopping for shoes for you girls.
Volunteer, Kind hearts make great lovers.
Educational institutes, Can't beat a man with a college education.
And as Jerry Springer use to say "final thoughts..."
It came to my attention that some woman will scoff at car shows and conventions as a place to meet guys. So let me explain. Guys like this stuff, and the point of this article is to list places to meet good guys. These are good guys, they have been loyal fans of their car or favorite TV show for longer than you have loved your favorite pair of shoes or jeans. These guys are in it for the long haul and that's going to be the same for relationships. The reason you don't value this guys is you fail to realize the amount of effort that people put into these hobbies. For example: the average car guy has done over 10grand of cosmetic car work and much more in performance tuning and upgrades. The Average convention geek has spent hundreds on new costumes every year for two or three conventions (often called con's), often staying in hotel suites for 3-5 days at 200-500 bucks a night, and partying every night like a rock star. That's 15 days of vacation time in New York, Chicago, San Diego, Denver, Tokyo, London just to name a few. That Sci Fi movie or TV show could have been on air for 1 episode, 1 season or 70 years and the fan loves it regardless. The point is, these guys take this type of care and dedication to everything in their lives. Their girlfriend, wife and kids will suffer no less dedication.

Like all dating scenes there are good and bad picks. Good looking guys and sweet guys.

Some Places to avoid:
Dance clubs & Raves, Guys care how your hips move when they want to get laid, the woman they marry have brains between their ears. Try showing off your smarts with heavy base playing.

Weight training rooms are filled with guys who will be more interested in his mirror than you, and most often are gay guys, or 'roid raging abusive pricks. A few reading this right now are thinking about trying to kick my ass for saying so.

Apple store, ipod is awesome but it's a fact apple has 10% of the computer market and 90% of the crazies.

Any bar you frequent, it hasn't worked yet so stop trying.

You or your girlfriends' house parties, you are going to fill your house with your ex's, friends you rejected, and stagnant tired conversations about this week's drama and its going to be the same at her place. Without proper introductions this always bombs, and it turns into a night of one night stands for all.

Green Lantern Pt 2

Saw the 12:01 midnight release of Green Lantern with some friends. It was a stunning film. I highly recommend it. The staff at Cinemark was outstanding, Mr White and Tj, contributed to one of my most memorable movie nights in a long time with fine service and a welcoming attitude. But a review can wait for another time. This blog is all about costuming, and tonight I wanted to show everyone costumes that range from t-shirts to fully sewn and crafted props. So have a look.

Here are some of the fans that joined us for the night. These videos will be edited on the weekend, but as requested I popped them up for the impatient. Enjoy the videos, if your in it or see a friend leave a comment.

Historical Societies and costuming?

So this last week I met a few of the ladies and gents from some of the historical societies of Colorado while at Territory Days. For those of you who don't know Territory Days began in 1975 as the "Rampart Range Sertoma Territory Days Parade and Buffalo Barbeque". In 1976 the named was changed to Territory Days to commemorate Old Colorado City as the first capitol of the Colorado Territory in 1861. It is now a three-day street festival.

Check out the link http://www.shopoldcoloradocity.com/content.php?id=97

Anyway some of the most interesting stuff at territory days are all the historical groups, historical societies, civil war reinactment, gunslingers, indians... and ninjas.... samurai...

I am Not kidding. Their are a lot of fun people out there replicating history and it maybe unfair to call replicated, functional items, costumes or props. But the thing is these guys and gals put in a tremendous effort. Something many of us in the costuming world understand. My friends always laugh when I keep saying I want to make functional props or I would like Halloween costumes that don't fall apart (which is why I know build everything myself). But the point I am trying to make is making a functional prop is an art form and all costumers should take a little time and try it out.

So with out further gilding of the lilly, please enjoy some of the fine works I came across at the 2011 Territory Days.

DAY 1 (Sunday)
A few of the very best in show! I even played with photoshop to make some old timey photo effects.

Chics with guns scary....
'
Poor Brooke, I tortured here by posing her with just about everyone and everything.

DAY 2 (Monday for me)

I am not sure if they where dressed for the day or visiting, but epic!
Working on the cowboy lean.
Panning for gold with friends.
If you don't see ninja's sneaking up on this samurai you failed the same spot check he did!
